Dallas allows privacy fences up to 4 feet in front yards and up to 9 feet in side and rear yards without a permit. Fences exceeding these heights require a building permit. Barbed wire is only allowed on fences over 6 feet. Dallas Development Code Chapter 51A governs fence regulations.
Dallas fence regulations are governed by the Development Code Chapter 51A. In residential districts, front yard fences are limited to 4 feet in height. Side and rear yard fences may be up to 9 feet without requiring a building permit in most residential zones. A fencing permit is required for blocking structures over 4 feet in front yards. Masonry or concrete fences generally require a building permit. Barbed wire is only permitted on fences exceeding 6 feet in height, primarily for commercial and industrial zones. Chain-link, wood, vinyl, wrought iron, and composite are common fence materials. Solid (privacy) fences must have the finished side facing outward toward neighbors. Pool barrier fences must comply with Chapter 51A safety requirements. Corner lots have visibility triangle requirements to maintain traffic sight lines. The Dallas Building Inspection Division processes fence permits. Properties in Conservation Districts, Historic Districts, or Planned Development districts may have additional fence requirements and design review processes.
Non-compliant fences may result in Code Compliance citations. Fines up to $500 per violation. Fences in historic districts without approval may need to be removed. Building without a required permit results in enforcement action.
