Montebello limits yard and garage sales to four city-wide weekends a year: the first weekend of March, June, September, and December. Sales run Friday 9 a.m. to Sunday 6 p.m., must be on private property, may sell only used items, and prohibit food sales.
Per the city's Code Enforcement Division, yard and garage sales are allowed only during scheduled city-wide sale weekends: the first weekend of March, June, September, and December, from Friday 9:00 a.m. to Sunday 6:00 p.m. Items must be displayed and offered for sale on the resident's own private property; public parks and parkways are off limits. Only used items may be sold, and the sale of food and beverages is prohibited. Temporary signs are not allowed on public rights-of-way including sidewalks, streets, and medians. All goods and signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. The city does not state a separate permit is required.
Holding a sale outside the scheduled weekends, selling food or new merchandise, or posting signs in the public right-of-way can prompt a code enforcement notice; each violation is subject to a civil penalty up to $1,000 per day (MMC 8.16.110).
