Fair Lawn enforces property maintenance standards prohibiting blighted conditions, including overgrown vegetation, accumulated debris, and exterior structural deterioration on residential and commercial properties.
Chapter 339, Property Maintenance, requires owners to keep exteriors free of weeds taller than 10 inches, junk, abandoned vehicles, and graffiti. Exterior walls, roofs, fences, and accessory structures must be maintained in good repair, weatherproof, and free of holes or rodent harborage. The Property Maintenance Officer issues notices to abate, and the borough may perform abatement at owner expense if violations persist. Foreclosed and vacant properties require registration under Chapter 339A.
Violations may result in fines from $100 to $2,000 per day, municipal liens for abatement costs, and court summons.
