Fair Lawn requires property owners and tenants to clear snow and ice from abutting sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of a storm.
Under Chapter 401, Streets and Sidewalks, owners and occupants of premises abutting any public sidewalk must remove snow and ice within 24 hours of the cessation of snowfall. When ice cannot be safely removed, the sidewalk must be treated with sand, salt, or other abrasive to make passage safe. Snow may not be pushed into the street or onto fire hydrants, storm drains, or neighbors' cleared walks. Commercial property owners face stricter enforcement during business hours.
Failure to clear sidewalks may result in fines from $100 to $1,250 per occurrence and borough billing for contracted clearing.
