Ridgewood requires residential property owners to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall, with stricter same-day rules in business and parking zones under Chapter 249.
Ridgewood's Streets and Sidewalks code, Chapter 249, requires owners and occupants of premises abutting public sidewalks to remove all snow and ice within 24 hours after the snow ceases falling. In the B-1, B-2, P, and P-2 business and office districts, snow must be removed concurrently with its fall, with snow that begins falling after 6:00 p.m. cleared no later than 9:00 a.m. the next morning. Removed snow may not be deposited into the street in a manner that impedes traffic flow. Property maintenance Chapter 223 reinforces that all sidewalks, steps, driveways, and similar paved areas for public use must be kept free of snow, ice, mud, and debris.
Failing to clear snow and ice within the deadlines, or piling snow in the roadway, lets the Village remove it and certify the cost to the property owner, plus issue summonses.
