Denton Code of Ordinances Chapter 17 (Solid Waste) and Chapter 28 (Property Maintenance) require residential trash carts to be stored out of public view when not placed for collection. Roll carts must be placed curbside no earlier than 5:00 PM the day before scheduled pickup and retrieved by midnight on collection day. The City of Denton Solid Waste Services Division provides 96-gallon carts for trash, recycling, and organics through its automated collection program.
Denton requires that residential roll carts be stored behind the front building line, inside a garage, or behind a screening fence when not set out for collection. Carts placed curbside for pickup must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day but may be set out as early as 5:00 PM the evening before. All carts must be removed from the curb by midnight on collection day. Carts must be placed at the curb with handles facing the house, lids closed, and at least three feet from mailboxes, vehicles, and other obstructions. Overloaded carts with lids that cannot close may not be serviced. Denton provides three carts per household -- trash (black lid), recycling (blue lid), and organics (green lid). Subdivisions with HOA covenants such as Robson Ranch and Rayzor Ranch may impose additional screening or enclosure requirements beyond city code. Code Enforcement can be reached at (940) 349-8329.
Failure to store carts behind the front building line or retrieve them by midnight on collection day may result in a notice of violation from Code Enforcement. First offenses typically receive a warning. Continued violations can result in fines up to $500 per day. Damaged or missing carts should be reported to Solid Waste Services at (940) 349-8700 for replacement.
