In residential districts, fences must be structurally sound and maintained in good repair; leaning, broken, or deteriorated fences are subject to property maintenance enforcement under Chapter 17. Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in all residential zoning districts. In commercial and industrial districts, barbed wire may be installed at least 6 feet above grade. Electric fences are permitted only in agricultural zones and select industrial districts with proper signage. The Development Code requires screening fences (typically 6-foot solid wood or masonry) as buffer yards between commercial and residential uses.

These buffer fences must present the finished side to the adjacent residential property. Chain link fences in residential front yards are discouraged but not prohibited; HOA covenants commonly restrict them. Fences may not obstruct drainage or stormwater flow. The city does not regulate fence color in the Development Code, but HOA rules often do. All fences must be set back from the public right-of-way; encroachment into the right-of-way is prohibited.
