Skokie, IL Property Maintenance: Trash Bin Storage (2026)

Skokie's property maintenance and refuse code requires residents to store trash and recycling carts out of public view from the street when not set out for collection. Acceptable storage locations include garages, behind fences, or in side/rear yards screened from street view. Carts may be placed at the curb no earlier than the evening (generally after 5 PM) before the scheduled collection day and must be retrieved from the curb within 24 hours after collection. On collection day, carts must be placed with wheels against the curb, handles facing the home, and with at least 3 feet of clearance from obstacles including mailboxes, parked vehicles, and fire hydrants (15 feet from hydrants). Carts must be closed to prevent litter. Overflowing or broken carts attracting pests may result in property maintenance violations.
