Full Breakdown
Chapter 8.56 of the Riverside County Code makes hazardous vegetation and combustible material on any unimproved parcel a public nuisance. Once the county fire chief issues a notice of violation and order to abate, the owner or person in control has a duty to clear the parcel, typically a 100-foot strip along roadways or around adjoining structures. Miss the deadline and county crews or a contractor clear it, with abatement costs, administration fees and attorney's fees billed to the owner and specially assessed as a lien on the parcel. This applies only in unincorporated Riverside County; the county's 28 cities, including Riverside, Moreno Valley, Corona and Temecula, enforce their own weed/nuisance codes.
Violations & Fines
First infraction up to $100; second infraction up to $200; third and later violations within a year charged as a misdemeanor up to $1,000 or 6 months in jail. Unpaid abatement costs become a special assessment lien on the parcel, and a repeat violation within two years triples the abatement costs owed.
