Oakland food workers must hold a California Food Handler Card within 30 days of hire, and each food facility must employ a Certified Food Protection Manager under CalCode.
California Health and Safety Code 113947 to 113948 requires food employees who prepare, store, or serve food in restaurants to obtain a state-approved food handler card within 30 days of hire and renew it every three years. Cards come from ANSI-accredited training providers. Separately, every food facility must have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager who has passed an ANSI-CFP certified manager exam. Alameda County Environmental Health verifies cards and certificates during routine inspections of Oakland restaurants and reports lapses on the inspection placard.
Operating with uncertified workers or no manager on site can produce inspection citations, conditional placards, fines, and required corrective action before the next routine visit.
