Columbus Ordinance 1730-2018 amended the city Fair Housing Code to ban housing discrimination based on lawful source of income, including Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, SSI, and child support. Ohio has no statewide ban; Columbus enforces locally.
Ordinance 1730-2018 amended Columbus City Code Chapter 2331 (Fair Housing) to add lawful source of income as a protected class. Landlords may not refuse to rent, advertise refusal of, or treat differently any applicant because their income comes from Section 8 vouchers, SSI, SSDI, veterans benefits, child support, or other lawful sources. The ordinance applies to all rental units in the city regardless of size. The Columbus Community Relations Commission (CRC) investigates complaints, attempts conciliation, and can refer to the City Attorney for civil enforcement. Ohio has no statewide source-of-income protection, leaving Columbus, Toledo, and several other cities to legislate locally.
Violators face civil penalties up to $10,000 for a first offense under CCC Β§2331 enforcement provisions, plus actual damages, injunctive relief, and attorney fees in private fair-housing suits.
