Full Breakdown

Columbus City Code § 709.03 caps weeds at twelve inches on any property or premises in the city, and separately bans letting weeds grow on the pavement, gutter, or dedicated street, alley, sidewalk, or right-of-way strip abutting the property. Growth dense or tall enough to count as "Rank Growth" is barred outright, since the code treats it as harborage for rodents and vermin. Agricultural, horticultural, and native-plant pollinator gardens are exempt, but only if they don't encroach on a neighbor's yard or a public sidewalk, don't block a corner's required sight lines, and contain no plants that meet the code's own definition of "Weeds." The Department of Building and Zoning Services enforces the chapter.

Violations & Fines

Violating Chapter 709 is a first-degree misdemeanor: up to $1,000 and 180 days in jail for individuals, up to $5,000 for organizations, with each day of continued violation counted as a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall can weeds be in Columbus before it's a violation?
City Code § 709.03(B) caps weeds at twelve inches on any property in Columbus. Grow past that and the owner or person in charge is in violation, whether or not the growth blocks anything.
Does a wildflower or vegetable garden count as weeds?
Not if it's genuinely agricultural, horticultural, or a native pollinator garden that doesn't block sight lines or sidewalks and contains no plant the code defines as a Weed: otherwise the 12-inch cap and Rank Growth ban still apply.
