Butte County STRs must observe quiet hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends and holidays, with no outdoor amplified sound during quiet hours and full compliance with the County exterior and interior noise standards.
Butte County Code Section 24-172.1(I)(6) imposes specific noise controls on short-term rentals on top of the County's general noise standards. STR operations must comply with Butte County Code Section 41A-7 (Exterior Noise Standards) and Section 41A-8 (Interior Noise Standards). On top of those baseline standards, Section 24-172.1 imposes quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and from 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. on weekends and federal holidays, recognizing that visiting families and short-term guests are more likely to gather in the evening. Outdoor amplified sound (speakers, sound systems, outdoor TVs, electronic instruments) is prohibited during all quiet hours. Commercial activity that draws additional noise -- weddings, receptions, parties, and similar gatherings -- is prohibited at any short-term rental and the prohibition must be disclosed to occupants prior to reservation. The property manager, available 24/7 and posted inside the dwelling within six feet of the front door, must respond to a noise complaint within 30 minutes; timely correction prevents the complaint from being recorded as a strike under Section 24-172.1(J).
Noise violations are enforced as strikes under Section 24-172.1(J): three verifiable strikes within 24 months result in cease-and-desist and permit revocation, with a 24-month reapplication ban. Independent violations of Sections 41A-7 or 41A-8 may also support standalone citations.
