Prince George's County requires a countywide short-term rental license, issued by the Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE), before renting a dwelling for 30 days or fewer. The program was enacted by CB-11-2018 and codified in Subtitle 5, Division 8 of the County Code.
Under CB-11-2018 (codified at Subtitle 5, Division 8), no one may engage in the business of short-term rentals in Prince George's County without a DPIE short-term rental license. A short-term rental is a residential dwelling occupied by a guest for fewer than 31 consecutive days where the host receives compensation. Applicants must obtain $1,000,000 liability insurance, prove the unit is their permanent residence, provide proof of ownership and a homestead tax credit copy, install smoke and CO detectors, post emergency and fire-exit information, ensure off-street parking, and notify adjacent neighbors and any HOA. A completed application allows up to 90 days of interim operation. Municipalities within the county may add rules on this baseline.
Operating a short-term rental without a DPIE license, or listing on a hosting platform unlicensed, violates Subtitle 5, Division 8 and subjects the host to violation notices, administrative citations, and license denial or revocation by DPIE.
