Genesee County levies a 5% accommodations excise tax on the total charge for short-term lodging, including cleaning fees, for reservations of 29 nights or fewer. Airbnb collects and remits it to the County Treasurer, but hosts still file a quarterly return. State 6% sales tax also applies.
Michigan's County Accommodations Tax Act (Act 263 of 1974, MCL 141.861 et seq.) lets qualifying counties tax transient lodging. Under MCL 141.862 the tax may not exceed 5% of the total accommodations charge (higher only by voter approval), and applies to persons providing rooms for dwelling, lodging, or sleeping to transient guests. Genesee County (Flint) imposes the 5% tax; effective May 1, 2024 Airbnb collects and remits it to the Genesee County Treasurer for reservations of 29 nights or shorter. Even when a platform collects 100% of the tax, hosts remain responsible for filing quarterly returns with the Treasurer, and separately owe Michigan's 6% state sales/use tax on short-term rentals.
Unpaid or unfiled accommodations tax is collected by the Genesee County Treasurer; failure to file quarterly returns can result in county tax assessment, interest, and penalties under the county's accommodations-tax administration.
