Chesterfield levies an 8% transient occupancy tax on lodging rented for fewer than 30 consecutive days, including short-term rentals. Stays of 30 or more consecutive days are exempt. Establishments with 41+ rooms add a 2% tourism improvement district fee.
The county's 8% transient occupancy tax applies to hotels, motels, boarding houses, travel campgrounds and other facilities offering guest rooms rented for continuous occupancy of fewer than 30 consecutive days, which covers short-term rentals. Guests staying 30 or more consecutive days owe no transient tax. Establishments with 41 or more rooms also collect a 2% Tourism Improvement District fee. Returns and payments are due by the 20th of the month following collection, filed with the Commissioner of the Revenue. Virginia Code 58.1-3819 authorizes counties to impose this tax.
Late or unpaid occupancy tax accrues penalties and interest; the Commissioner of the Revenue may assess and collect unremitted tax.
