Sarasota County levies a 6% Tourist Development Tax on rentals of six months or less, on top of 7% state sales tax. Owners must register a bed-tax account with the Sarasota County Tax Collector before renting.
Under FS 125.0104 (Local Option Tourist Development Act), the county imposes a bed tax on transient accommodations. The Tax Collector states the tax is 'a 6% charge on the revenue from rentals of six months or less' and is due 'on the rent and other fees included in the rent such as: accidental damage insurance, cleaning fees, roll away bed fees, pet fees, and utility fees.' Property owners 'must register before renting units.' Airbnb and Vrbo/HomeAway remit the tax for bookings on their platforms; owners renting elsewhere (Booking.com, Evolve, direct) must collect and remit themselves.
Failure to register, collect, or remit the tourist tax subjects owners to Tax Collector delinquency penalties, interest, and collection action.
