Sanger imposes a four-percent Transient Occupancy Tax on all lodging stays of 30 consecutive days or fewer under Chapter 66, Article V of the Sanger City Code. This applies to short-term rental hosts as well as hotels and motels. Operators must register with the city, collect the tax from guests, and remit it to the Finance Department on the schedule set by the tax administrator. A general business license fee also applies.
Under Sanger City Code Section 66-128, a four-percent Transient Occupancy Tax is imposed on the rent charged for occupancy of any hotel, which the code broadly defines to include any structure occupied by transients for dwelling or sleeping purposes, covering houses, apartments, mobile homes, and similar accommodations. This encompasses short-term rental properties listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo. Stays exceeding 30 consecutive days are exempt (Section 66-129). Operators must register with the city under Section 66-133 and will receive a certificate of registration. The tax is collected from the guest at the time of payment and remitted to the city on the schedule established by the tax administrator (Section 66-131). The operator may retain a two-percent collection allowance if taxes are timely paid. Failure to remit triggers penalty interest and potential administrative enforcement. Some platforms collect and remit TOT on behalf of hosts, but operators remain ultimately responsible for confirming compliance with the Sanger Finance Department. A separate general business license under Chapter 18 may also be required, with fees varying by business type. California Revenue and Taxation Code Section 7280 authorizes municipal TOT levies.
