Unincorporated Placer County charges Transient Occupancy Tax of 10% on the Eastern Slope (North Lake Tahoe) and 8% on the Western Slope, plus a 1% or 2% North Lake Tahoe TBID assessment near the lake. The annual STR permit application fee is $326.02 and the Fire Life Safety inspection fee is $507.02 (valid 3 years). Returns are due quarterly.
Per Placer County Code Chapter 4, Article 4.16 and the TOT Tax Rate page, lodging stays of 30 days or fewer in unincorporated Placer County are subject to Transient Occupancy Tax: 10% on the Eastern Slope (North Lake Tahoe β Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Tahoma, Carnelian Bay, Olympic Valley, Northstar) and 8% on the Western Slope (Auburn area, Foresthill, Granite Bay, Meadow Vista). The boundary runs near Rainbow Road on I-80. North Lake Tahoe Tourism Business Improvement District adds 2% closest to the lake or 1% in zones farther from the lake; Olympic Valley/Alpine Meadows MTC adds 1.5% (post-Feb. 2023). Hosts must hold a TOT certificate before listing. TOT and TBID worksheets are due on or before the last day of the month after each calendar quarter, and a return must be filed even when no rentals occurred. Neither Airbnb nor Vrbo collects on the host's behalf in Placer County. The Placer County STR permit application fee is $326.02 (non-refundable); the interior Fire Life Safety inspection costs $507.02 and is valid for three years.
Operating without a TOT certificate or failing to file quarterly returns triggers penalties, interest, and possible permit revocation under Article 9.42 and Chapter 4. Unpermitted STR operation is subject to fines up to $5,000 per violation.
