In unincorporated Calaveras County, yard, barn and garage sale signs are exempt from sign permits under Zoning Code Section 17.24.030.D if smaller than 18 by 30 inches, posted no more than seven days before the event, and removed within 72 hours after the last day. They may not be posted on traffic signs, utility poles or in the right-of-way.
Calaveras County Zoning Code Section 17.24.030.D exempts special-event signs - including yard, barn and garage sales, open houses, theatrical performances, musical events and fundraisers - from sign permits, provided they meet four standards: they are smaller than 18 inches by 30 inches; they are posted no longer than seven days prior to the event; they are removed within 72 hours of the last day of the event; and they are not posted on traffic-control signs, utility poles or traffic-advisory signs. The garage sale itself is regulated under Section 17.25.220.A.1, which allows yard and garage sales by a resident of the premises for a maximum of three consecutive days, no more than six times per year, without a use permit. Additional signage beyond the exempt category may be allowed as a temporary sign under Section 17.24.100.F, which permits temporary signs smaller than four feet by eight feet for up to six weeks. Sign-placement prohibitions in Section 17.24.040 still apply: no signs may be placed in the public right-of-way or on public property without an encroachment permit, none may be affixed to utility poles or trees, and none may imitate or resemble traffic-control devices or create a traffic hazard. These content-neutral rules let residents advertise sales while keeping rural roadsides clear of clutter and hazards.
Garage sale signs that exceed 18 by 30 inches, are posted more than seven days early, remain up beyond 72 hours after the sale, or are attached to utility poles, traffic signs or placed in the public right-of-way lose their exemption and may be removed by the County. Holding sales beyond three days or more than six times a year violates Section 17.25.220.A.1.
