Pitt County, NC Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 9(A)(1)(x) defines Temporary Signs as those relating to events like elections, farm auctions, yard sales, agricultural production sales, annual charitable, civic or fraternal events, horse shows, festivals, bona fide grand openings and model home show openings, so a yard sale sign falls squarely inside this category rather than under the county's permanent on-premises or identification sign rules.

Section 9(C) lists Temporary Signs among the signs exempt from Pitt County's permit and fee requirements, along with mailboxes, house numbers, real estate signs and a handful of other categories, but that exemption still comes with placement and dimensional conditions the sign must follow. Under Section 9(C)(1)(i), a temporary sign, including a yard sale sign, cannot go up more than 30 days before the event and must come down within 10 days after it ends, and it is capped at 100 square feet in area and 8 feet in height. Even though no permit is required, the ordinance still requires exempt signs to be maintained in good condition and not become a hazard to safety, health or public welfare; a sign found in violation can be ordered corrected or removed. Portable yard sale signs, including any painted on or displayed on a vehicle or trailer, are otherwise banned as Portable Signs under Section 9(D)(1)(d), but the ordinance specifically carves out an exception for portable signs used as Temporary Signs under Section 9(A)(1)(x) that comply with the Section 9(C)(1)(i) placement window, so a yard sale sign staked in the yard is fine as long as it fits inside that 30-day/10-day, 100-square-foot, 8-foot window.
