Racine County, WI Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 20-1380(19) exempts temporary private sale signs advertising occasional noncommercial personal-property sales, such as house sales, garage sales, and rummage sales, from the zoning permit otherwise required for signs. The exemption carries no dimensional standard of its own, unlike neighboring exemptions in the same section that cap nonprofit event signs at four square feet or real estate signs at nine square feet. These signs still fall under the general restrictions of Sec. 20-1357: they cannot sit in a vision corner or triangle, obstruct a street right-of-way or driveway sight line, or use flashing or animated lighting. The zoning chapter applies in unincorporated towns that adopted county zoning, not inside the City of Racine or the county's incorporated villages.
