Garage-sale signs are temporary ground signs. Horry County allows one temporary ground sign per property (up to 6 square feet on a single-family lot), set back at least 5 feet from the road right-of-way and all property lines, and out of sight triangles.
The Horry County Zoning Ordinance regulates yard-sale and other short-term signs as 'temporary ground signs.' A property is limited to one temporary ground sign, which must be outside the road rights-of-way and set back no less than 5 feet from side, rear and front property lines, and kept out of required sight triangles at intersections. On an existing single-family lot of record the temporary ground sign may be up to 6 square feet; on nonresidential or construction-approved parcels it may reach 32 square feet and 8 feet tall. A temporary sign permit costs $50 for regulated temporary signage. Signs must be removed, relocated or disassembled if the zoning administrator determines a dangerous condition exists.
Signs in the right-of-way, exceeding size limits, or creating a hazard can be removed by the county, and a temporary sign permit may be required.
