Summary

A garage sale sign is a temporary sign under YCC § 19.20.110 and is limited to one per street frontage, 32 square feet, kept out of parking areas and rights-of-way, and removed within 15 days of the sale. The rule applies to every temporary sign, garage-sale signs included.

These county ordinances apply to unincorporated areas of Yakima County. Incorporated cities within the county may have their own rules that take precedence over county-level regulations.

All temporary signs shall conform to the following: (1) Only one temporary sign on each street frontage per parcel or lot is permitted. (2) No temporary sign shall be placed in a required parking space, driveway, or clear-view triangle. (3) No temporary sign may be placed in the public right-of-way or an easement unless specifically permitted by the County. (4) Temporary signs placed on the ground shall be separated from parking and driveway areas by a curb or other barrier. (5) A temporary sign shall be removed within 15 days after the event for which it is intended. (6) No temporary signs shall exceed 32 square feet in area.

Full Breakdown

070, defines a 'yard sale' partly by its signage: an event is occurring whenever there is a sign that announces or publicizes it. 110, which applies to all temporary signs including sale, rent and election signs. The section allows only one temporary sign per street frontage on a parcel or lot, and bars placing any temporary sign in a required parking space, driveway or clear-view triangle. A temporary sign cannot go in the public right-of-way or an easement unless the County specifically permits it, and any sign placed on the ground must be separated from parking and driveway areas by a curb or other barrier.

Size is capped at 32 square feet, well above what a typical yard-sale sign needs, but the removal deadline is the operative constraint for a garage sale: the sign must come down within 15 days of the event it advertises. 020(9), the 15-day sign removal window functions as the outer limit, not a grace period to leave signs up indefinitely between sales.

Violations & Fines

A garage-sale sign left up more than 15 days after the sale, placed in a driveway, parking space or clear-view triangle, or posted in the county right-of-way without permission violates § 19.20.110 and is subject to the county's general sign code enforcement, which can require removal at the owner's expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can my garage sale sign be in unincorporated Yakima County?
Up to 32 square feet under YCC § 19.20.110(6), the same cap that applies to any temporary sign, though garage-sale signs are typically far smaller in practice.
Can I put a garage sale sign in the road right-of-way?
No, not unless the County specifically permits it. Section 19.20.110(3) bars any temporary sign in the public right-of-way or an easement without that permission.
How soon do I have to take my garage sale sign down?
Within 15 days after the sale under § 19.20.110(5). Since a sale itself can only run three days under § 19.18.020(9), the sign should come down almost immediately once the event ends.
