Homestead allows seasonal holiday decorations and displays on residential properties. Displays should be put up a reasonable time before the holiday and removed within 30 days after. Electrical connections must be safe. Inflatable and lighted displays are permitted but should not create traffic hazards or unreasonable light trespass.
Homestead takes a permissive approach to residential holiday decorations. Seasonal displays including lights, inflatables, yard decorations, and religious displays are generally permitted. Displays should be installed no more than 30-45 days before the holiday and removed within 30 days after. Electrical connections for lighting displays must be safe β outdoor-rated extension cords, GFCI-protected outlets, and proper connections are important given South Florida's frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Inflatable decorations must be secured to prevent blowing into streets or neighboring properties, especially important given Homestead's occasional high winds. Lighted displays should not create unreasonable light trespass onto neighboring properties. Displays on the roof must be installed safely without damaging HVHZ-rated roofing materials. The city does not generally regulate the content of holiday displays on private property. Displays should not obstruct sidewalks, driveways, or visibility at intersections.
Holiday displays left up year-round may trigger code enforcement for property maintenance. Unsafe electrical connections may be flagged. No fines for timely seasonal displays. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 224-4800.
