Kootenai County's sign code has no separate category for political signs. In residential and agricultural zones, unlighted on-premise temporary signs are allowed for up to 28 days per calendar year, at 12 sq ft and 8 feet maximum. Off-premise signs are generally prohibited.
The Kootenai County Land Use and Development Code (Article 4.8) regulates signs by type and zone rather than by message, so a yard sign expressing a political view is treated as a temporary on-premise sign. In the Agricultural, Rural, Agricultural Suburban, Restricted Residential, Mining, and High Density Residential zones, LUDC 8.4.805(B)(3) allows "Unlighted, on-premise, portable or temporary signs" for no more than 28 days per calendar year, not exceeding 12 sq ft and 8 feet in height. Off-premise signs are prohibited in all zones except temporary event signs (up to 14 days/year). Signs must not obstruct traffic visibility at corners.
Signs not permitted by the code, or exceeding the size, height, or duration limits, are prohibited and subject to enforcement and possible removal.
