Canton regulates political signs content-neutrally as temporary signs. Under Codified Ordinance 1187.11, temporary signs may be displayed up to 30 consecutive days, twice per year, are exempt from a permit, and a small temporary sign is capped at 6 square feet.
After the U.S. Supreme Court's Reed v. Town of Gilbert decision, Canton regulates yard and political signs by size and duration rather than message. Codified Ordinance 1187.11 governs temporary signs: they may be displayed up to a maximum of 30 consecutive days, two times per year, and are exempt from permit requirements. A small temporary sign has a maximum area of six square feet; a large temporary freestanding, window, or wall sign may be up to 16 square feet. Signs must be on private property with the owner's permission, made of durable materials, and not illuminated. In unincorporated townships, ORC Ch. 519 zoning and any township sign rules apply.
Signs placed in the public right-of-way or exceeding size/duration limits may be removed by the city as a nuisance. Ohio law also protects candidate signs on private property from removal by others.
