St. Tammany Parish, LA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Under Code of Ordinances Sec. 36-1, anyone wanting to distribute or display a political sign in connection with an organized campaign, whether for a candidate, slate, ticket or ballot proposal, must first apply to the parish department of planning and development for a temporary sign permit and submit the applicant's name, address and phone number along with specimen copies of every sign type to be used. The department issues the permit on receipt of a complete application, and the permit then covers an unlimited number of signs of the submitted types.

A permit runs for up to 90 consecutive calendar days, and if the race or measure involves more than one election it automatically extends to the tenth day after the general election. Two hard limits apply regardless of the permit: no political sign may be erected or displayed in any public right-of-way, and no political sign may exceed 32 square feet in sign face area. Political signs in the right-of-way are also independently addressed in Sec. 36-9(c), which bars political, real estate or similar signs from the right-of-way entirely and directs large versions (plywood on 2x4 supports, or anything over four square feet) to be tagged with a notice of violation and removed after five days.

Once an election cycle ends, the permit holder must remove every sign placed under that permit no later than ten calendar days after the last relevant election.
