Rockville, MD Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Chapter 19.5 of the Rockville City Code governs sign regulations citywide. Political and election signs are permitted on private residential property without a sign permit. Each election sign is limited to a maximum of 5 square feet. Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, traffic signs, streetlights, or any city property. Signs that obstruct pedestrian or vehicle sight lines at intersections are prohibited and may be removed immediately for safety reasons. Maryland election law also protects the right to display political signs on private property, and local jurisdictions may not impose content-based restrictions. While Rockville does not impose time limits on political sign display, property owners are encouraged to remove signs within a reasonable period after an election. Signs on other private property require the property owner's permission. Private residential signs for non-election purposes are limited to 150 square inches.
