Sammamish regulates political signs content-neutrally as non-commercial temporary signs. On private property a sign may be up to 32 sq ft and 8 ft tall for up to 180 days. In the right-of-way, a non-A-frame sign may be up to 4 sq ft and 3 ft tall for up to 180 days.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015), Sammamish no longer regulates political signs differently from other non-commercial messages. By Ordinance O2017-436 (adopted May 16, 2017), all such signs fall under a single content-neutral 'non-commercial temporary sign' category, governed by Chapter 21A.45 SMC (and Chapter 21B.45 SMC in the Town Center). Three types are defined. Type 1, a non-A-frame sign in the City right-of-way, may be up to 4 square feet and 3 feet above grade, for a maximum of 180 consecutive days per calendar year. Type 2, an A-frame sign in the right-of-way, may be up to 6 square feet and 3.5 feet tall, for a maximum of 5 consecutive days. Type 3, a sign on private property, may be up to 32 square feet and 8 feet tall, with the landowner's permission, for up to 180 consecutive days per calendar year. No permit is required. Non-commercial temporary signs may not be illuminated, may not harm landscaping, and are prohibited in center medians, traffic circles or islands, roundabouts (and the outer edge), vehicle travel lanes, sidewalks, planting strips adjacent to City-owned land, and on traffic-control, utility, or signal poles. On roads without sidewalks, signs must sit outside the edge of the asphalt.
Signs placed in violation of Chapter 21A.45 or 21B.45 SMC are subject to enforcement and possible removal under SMC 21A.45.100. Sign and property owners are responsible for removing signs once the maximum allowed duration has passed.
