Political campaign signs are exempt from a sign permit but must sit at least 10 feet behind the street line and 50 feet from the nearest intersection corner. They may go up no more than 45 days before the election and come down within 10 days after (Sec. 27-61502(c)(16)).
The 2022 Zoning Ordinance (Subtitle 27, Sec. 27-61500 Signage) governs signs countywide. Section 27-61502(c) lists signs subject to the sign standards but exempt from a sign permit, and subsection (16) covers political campaign signs. Such signs must be located at least 10 feet behind the street line and at least 50 feet from the nearest corner of any street intersection. They may be erected no more than 45 days before the election and must be removed within 10 days after the general election, or within 10 days after the primary if the candidate is not successful. The ordinance does not authorize political signs in the public right-of-way. Municipalities may impose additional limits, and HOA restrictions may be no more restrictive
Posting political signs too close to an intersection, in the right-of-way, earlier than 45 days before the election, or leaving them up beyond 10 days after can result in sign-code enforcement and removal of the signs.
