Door-to-door solicitors in Suffolk must register with the chief of police and obtain a permit under City Code Chapter 62, backed by a $500 bond. The permit is valid one year and must be carried and shown on demand.
Suffolk requires anyone going door to door to sell goods or services, or to request charitable donations, to register with the chief of police before entering residential premises, under Chapter 62, Article II of the City Code. Section 62-32 requires the applicant's name, addresses, physical description, and criminal history. Section 62-33 issues the permit unless the applicant has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude; it runs one year and must be carried and displayed on demand. Section 62-34 requires a $500 bond per solicitor. Peddlers and itinerant merchants also owe a separate city license tax. Invited guests, farm-product sellers, and newspaper carriers are exempt.
Soliciting without a permit, or giving false information to obtain one, violates Chapter 62; the permit is void upon conviction and police can stop the solicitor and pursue misdemeanor penalties.
