Colorado Pool Barrier Code Adopted Through IRC

Colorado does not have a unique state pool fencing statute for residential pools, but the International Residential Code Appendix G (adopted by most local jurisdictions and the State Building Codes Council under C.R.S. 24-32-3301 et seq.) requires 48-inch minimum barriers around residential pools deeper than 24 inches with self-closing, self-latching gates. Public pools under 5 CCR 1003-5 require 60-inch barriers and approved access controls. Spas with locking covers may be exempt from barrier requirements.

Building code violations result in stop-work orders, fines $100-$1,000, and refusal to issue certificate of occupancy until compliant barriers are installed.
