All pools and spas over 24 inches deep in Aurora must be surrounded by a 4-foot barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates per the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
Aurora adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) barrier requirements for all residential pools and spas capable of holding more than 24 inches of water. The barrier must be at least 48 inches (4 feet) in height measured from the outside ground surface, with a maximum 2-inch gap at the bottom. Vertical members must be no more than 1.75 inches apart, and horizontal members over 4 feet apart to prevent climbing. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, self-latching, with the latch at least 54 inches above grade. When the house forms part of the barrier, doors leading from the dwelling to the pool must have audible alarms or the pool must have an approved safety cover or a power safety cover on the pool itself. Above-ground pools with walls 48 inches or higher may use the pool wall as the barrier with a removable or lockable ladder. Spas and hot tubs can use a locking safety cover that meets ASTM F1346 in lieu of a full enclosure.
