Littleton follows the Colorado-adopted IRC Chapter 42 for pool barriers: minimum 60-inch height, self-closing/self-latching gates with latches at least 54 inches high, and maximum 4-inch picket spacing. All swimming and wading pools 24 inches or deeper must be fully enclosed.
Littleton enforces pool fencing requirements per the Colorado-adopted IRC Chapter 42 and the ULUC. In all residential districts, swimming and wading pools with a depth of 24 inches or greater must be fully enclosed by a barrier. Fencing must be a minimum of 60 inches (5 feet) high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Gate latches must be at minimum 54 inches high. Wrought iron fence picket spacing must not exceed 4 inches. A building or structure (such as a house wall) may serve as part of the barrier. If the house forms part of the pool barrier, door alarms are required on openings providing direct access to the pool area. The pool fence must be complete before the pool is filled with water.
Non-compliant pool barrier: code violation requiring correction. Pool filled without barrier: immediate enforcement. Liability exposure for injuries.
