North Carolina Pool Barrier Requirements Statewide

The North Carolina Residential Code, adopted under N.C.G.S. Chapter 143 Article 9, requires barriers around residential swimming pools deeper than 24 inches. Fences must be at least 48 inches high, have no openings allowing a 4-inch sphere to pass, and gates must be self-closing and self-latching. The state Building Code Council adopts uniform standards under N.C.G.S. 143-138, and local amendments cannot weaken these life-safety requirements.

Failure to install code-compliant pool barriers can result in stop-work orders, civil penalties, and liability exposure for drowning incidents on the property.
