Prince George's County enforces the International Residential Code pool-barrier standard through DPIE. Outdoor residential pools must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high, with no opening passing a 4-inch sphere and self-closing, self-latching gates opening away from the pool, per IRC Section AG105.2.
The County adopts the IRC pool appendix through the Maryland Building Performance Standards and County Code Subtitle 4, and DPIE inspects the barrier before a pool may be filled. Section AG105.2 requires a barrier whose top is at least 48 inches above grade on the side facing away from the pool, with a maximum 2-inch gap at grade and openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching; where the latch release is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, the release must be on the pool side. Mesh and slat spacing are limited so a child cannot climb or squeeze through.
A pool without a compliant barrier fails the DPIE final inspection and cannot be filled. Removing or disabling a required barrier afterward is a building-code violation under Subtitle 4, enforceable by stop-work order and civil citation.
