Jefferson County (Louisville Metro) requires all residential swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates, per the Kentucky Residential Code adopted under LMCO Β§ 150.001. Gates must latch when released from 6 inches from the post. No gap may exceed 4 inches.
LMCO Β§ 150.001 adopts the Kentucky Residential Code (KRC) which incorporates International Building Code pool barrier requirements, applicable throughout Jefferson County. All residential swimming pools must be enclosed by a fence, wall, or barrier at least 48 inches measured from outside the barrier. Self-closing, self-latching gates are required; gates must open away from the pool and must positively latch when released from 6 inches from the gatepost. No gaps or openings allowing a 4-inch sphere to pass through are permitted. Gate latches must be maintained per LMCO Β§ 156.052. Inspections occur during building permit review. The Louisville Metro Codes & Regulations provides a Swimming Pool Enclosure Requirements Form for guidance.
Non-compliant enclosures: Code Enforcement citation. Pools without required fencing may be ordered closed until brought into compliance. Failure to maintain self-latching gates: property maintenance violation under Β§ 156.052.
