KCMO adopts the International Residential Code (IRC) which requires a pool barrier of at least 48 inches in height around all residential in-ground and above-ground pools. Barriers must completely enclose the pool area with no gaps wider than 4 inches. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching; latches must be on the inside of the barrier or at least 54 inches above grade. Doors from the house that provide direct access to the pool must have a self-closing, self-latching mechanism. Anti-entrapment drain covers are required per the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
