Oregon requires every residential pool holding over 24 inches of water to be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high, with openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. Gates must open away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching.
Under the Oregon Residential Specialty Code (Appendix V/G), the top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade on the side facing away from the pool, and openings in the barrier must not allow passage of a 4-inch-diameter sphere. Pedestrian access gates must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing with a self-latching device. Clackamas County Building Codes inspects the barrier as part of the pool permit. This barrier standard applies statewide in unincorporated Clackamas County.
A pool that fails final inspection for a non-compliant barrier cannot be approved for use; correction to the 48-inch/4-inch-sphere/self-latching standard is required.
