A residential swimming pool in New Orleans must be enclosed by a 6-foot fence with a self-closing gate. Any window or door that can access the pool area must be protected by pool barrier alarms, per the city's Residential Swimming Pool Acknowledgment.
The city enforces its amendments to the International Residential/Building Code through the Safety & Permits Residential Swimming Pool Acknowledgment. Owners must provide adequate handrails for pool entry and exit, a 6-foot-high fence, and a walk space of 3 feet on two sides or 50% of the perimeter, whichever is greater. Where a building wall serves as part of the barrier, barriers and/or an audible alarm are required on that wall's openings. CZO 21.6.EE also requires the pool to sit 2 feet from any lot line or 4 feet from a neighboring building's wall, whichever is greater.
Failure to install the required fence, gate, alarms, or walk space is a deviation that prevents issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy/Completion at final inspection.
