Greenville County has adopted the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. Outdoor pools and spas must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high, with limited ground clearance and openings that won't pass a 4-inch sphere.
Under ISPSC Section 305, adopted by Greenville County, the top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade around the entire perimeter. Ground clearance can't exceed 2 inches over non-solid surfaces (grass, gravel) or 4 inches over solid surfaces. Openings must not pass a 4-inch sphere. For fences with closely spaced horizontals under 45 inches apart, vertical member spacing can't exceed 1.75 inches; chain-link openings max 1.75 inches. A signed pool fence affidavit is required, and barriers/gates/alarms are checked at final inspection.
A $20 re-inspection fee is charged if the barrier isn't installed at final inspection. Failure to comply may result in a civil citation under SC Code Section 6-9-80; the pool may not be used until barriers are approved.
