Under Louisiana's adopted pool and spa code, spas and hot tubs are treated like pools for barrier purposes. Glazing next to a spa within 60 inches of a walking surface must be safety glazing. A listed safety cover can satisfy the barrier requirement.
The adopted International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC Sec. 305) applies its barrier requirements to spas and hot tubs the same as pools, including the 48-inch barrier and self-latching gate rules. The code specifically designates glazing 'in walls, enclosures or fences containing or adjacent to hot tubs, spas, whirlpools' where the bottom exposed edge is less than 60 inches above a walking surface as a hazardous location requiring safety glazing. For spas and hot tubs, a listed and labeled ASTM F1346 safety cover is an approved means of satisfying barrier protection. Jefferson Parish issues the building/electrical permits for spa installation, and the parish notes permanently installed equipment requires a permit.
A spa or hot tub without a compliant barrier or listed safety cover is a code violation blocking final inspection. Hazardous-location glazing that is not safety glazing must be corrected before approval.
