Residential pools in Louisville must meet Kentucky Residential Code safety standards including barrier enclosures. Public pools are inspected twice annually by Louisville Metro Public Health under Board of Health regulations. Residential pool permits are issued by Codes & Regulations with construction inspection required.
Louisville Metro adopts the Kentucky Residential Code for residential pool safety under LMCO Β§ 150.001. All residential pools (in-ground and above-ground with water depth over 24 inches) require a building permit from Codes & Regulations (502-574-3321) and must be inspected during construction. Pool barriers (48-inch minimum fence with self-latching gates) are mandatory. Public pools β including those in apartments, condos, subdivisions, hotels, and clubs β are regulated under Louisville Metro Board of Health rules administered by the Department of Public Health and Wellness. Public pools are inspected twice annually; inspectors verify lifeguard certification, water quality, equipment, and on-deck safety gear. Public outdoor pool permits: $75/year; indoor pool: $200 for the first two pools, $100 each additional (not to exceed $500).
Residential: code violations for pools built without permits or not meeting safety standards. Public pool violations: Health Department enforcement, possible closure. Late permit fee: $55 for annual permits not received by May 1.
