Florida Statute Β§515 (Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act) applies in Miami-Dade County, requiring barriers, anti-entrapment drains, and at least one additional safety feature. Miami-Dade's HVHZ adds hurricane-resistant requirements for all pool structures.
The Florida Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (FL Β§515) is among the strictest pool safety laws in the nation and applies throughout Miami-Dade County. Required safety measures include: a barrier meeting Section 33-12 standards, self-closing and self-latching gates, anti-entrapment drain covers compliant with the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Act, and at least one additional safety feature such as a pool alarm, safety cover, door alarm, or self-closing doors. Florida has the highest pool density in the US with approximately 1.7 million residential pools. Miami-Dade's HVHZ requirements add hurricane-resistant standards for pool enclosures, screen rooms, and associated structures. Annual pool inspections may be required for STR properties.
Non-compliance with FL Β§515 may result in fines and potential criminal liability. Pool alarm and barrier deficiencies must be corrected immediately. Failure blocks certificate of occupancy or STR Certificate of Use.
