New swimming pools, spas, and major remodels in Ojai require a building permit and compliance with the California Swimming Pool Safety Act (H&SC Β§115920-115929). In addition to a compliant physical barrier, at least one additional safety feature is required such as a pool cover, alarm, or self-latching door hardware on home exits to the pool area. Anti-entrapment drain covers compliant with the Virginia Graeme Baker Act are mandatory. Permit applications are processed through Ojai Community Development at (805) 646-5581.

Non-compliant pool drain covers (Virginia Graeme Baker Act): $500 fine and immediate order to close pool until corrected. Failure to comply with pool safety orders: $500/day.
