California Health and Safety Code 115920-115929 requires residential pools to incorporate multiple safety features. All pool and spa drains must comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act with anti-entrapment covers. New residential pools require at least two of the following: pool enclosure meeting barrier standards, safety cover meeting ASTM F1346, pool alarm, door/gate alarms for pool access points, or self-latching devices on all access gates. Existing pools must be brought into compliance upon property sale or significant remodeling. Pool chemical storage must follow the California Fire Code. Proper signage including CPR instructions should be posted at pool areas.
Non-compliance with pool safety requirements can result in fines, mandatory correction, and pool closure orders. Real estate transactions require pool safety compliance certificates.
