All residential pools in Ventura must be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches (5 feet) high per California Health and Safety Code 115920-115929. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching. Doors from the home to the pool area require alarms or an approved safety cover.
Ventura enforces the California Building Code and Health and Safety Code 115920-115929 for pool safety barriers. Barriers must be at least 60 inches high with no climbable features. Gate latches must be at least 60 inches above grade on the outside or on the pool side with a release mechanism. Openings must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass. Doors providing direct access from the home must have self-closing devices plus alarms or the pool must have an approved safety cover per ASTM F1346. Above-ground pools with walls 48 inches or higher may meet the barrier requirement with a removable/lockable ladder. All pool barrier requirements apply at the time of pool construction and are verified during the final inspection.
Non-compliant pool barriers can result in immediate correction orders, fines, and potential pool closure until barriers meet code. Non-compliance may void insurance coverage.
