Ventura restricts on-street parking of oversized vehicles (RVs, motorhomes, boats on trailers) per SBMC Chapter 16.217. Any vehicle longer than 25 ft, wider than 80 in, or taller than 82 in is prohibited from parking on any city street between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., seven days a week, in residential and business areas without a city Oversized Vehicle Permit. Unhitched trailers (including boat trailers detached from a tow vehicle) are unlawful on any city street or alley at any time. Living or sleeping in any vehicle on a city street is separately prohibited under SBMC 10.150.070.
SBMC 16.217 is adopted under California Vehicle Code §22507, which authorizes local authorities to restrict parking of vehicles six feet or more in height after a noticed public hearing. Ventura defines 'oversized vehicle' as any vehicle exceeding 25 ft length, 80 in width, or 82 in height — explicitly excluding standard pickup trucks under those dimensions. Oversized Vehicle Permits (SBMC 16.217.050) are issued by the Ventura Police Traffic Unit (805-339-4401) and are valid for up to five consecutive days, with a maximum of ten days within any 90-day period and no more than twelve permits per vehicle per calendar year — designed for loading, unloading, and short visits, not long-term storage. Even with a permit, vehicles remain subject to the citywide 72-hour movement rule (SBMC 16.210.040C): any vehicle must be moved at least 2/10 of a mile every 72 hours or it may be marked, cited, and towed under Cal. Veh. Code §22651(k). Unhitched/disconnected trailers are flatly banned on streets and alleys per SBMC 16.217.060. RVs and boats are best stored off-street in a side or rear yard behind required setbacks, in an enclosed accessory structure, or in a commercial storage facility. On-site RV storage on a residential lot must conform to Title 24 (Zoning) yard, setback, and screening standards for accessory uses. Coastal-zone properties have additional Coastal Commission overlays that can further restrict visible storage near the bluffs.
Parking an oversized vehicle on a city street between 6 a.m.–6 p.m. without an Oversized Vehicle Permit, exceeding the 5 consecutive day / 10 days per 90 days / 12 permits per year caps, parking an unhitched trailer on any street or alley, leaving any vehicle for more than 72 hours without moving it at least 2/10 mile, or living/sleeping in an RV parked on a public street. Citations may be issued and the vehicle towed under Cal. Veh. Code §22651(k); the Abandoned Vehicle Hotline (805-339-4432) accepts complaints.
