Loudoun County, VA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Chapter 1082's storage-practices and storage-containers sections set the physical standard for the garbage cans and dumpsters kept on a property in unincorporated Loudoun County, separate from the curbside set-out rules that apply specifically to recyclables under Chapter 1086. Containers must be durable, watertight and rust-resistant, with a closely-fitting lid and handles for collection. Residential and business containers must hold no less than ten gallons and no more than thirty-two gallons, unless they are a mechanically-lifted type designed for a collection vehicle, in which case size and design must match the equipment.

Containers must be leak-proof, kept free of accumulated liquid or solid residue, and cleaned and sanitized as often as necessary; any container with a loosely fitting lid, holes or cracks may not be used. Before waste goes into the container, garbage must be wrapped in paper, plastic or similar material, and bulky rubbish set out for hand collection must be cut, baled, tied or packaged to no more than thirty-six inches in length and fifty pounds. Owners, occupants and custodians are separately responsible for controlling excessive insects and rodent vectors around the storage location so containers don't become a nuisance or health hazard to neighboring properties.
